It has a coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. The capital city is Tirana. Historically under Ottoman rule, it gained independence in 1912. The country's landscape is notably mountainous with significant biodiversity and is home to cultural UNESCO sites. Albania is a parliamentary republic with a transitional economy.
