It was established in 2008 through the merger of the former districts of Annaberg, Aue-Schwarzenberg, Stollberg, and Mittlerer Erzgebirgskreis. The district is part of the Erzgebirge, or Ore Mountains, known for their rich mining history and traditional craftsmanship, especially woodwork and Christmas decorations. The region's capital is Annaberg-Buchholz, and it boasts scenic landscapes ideal for outdoor activities.
