The Federal District in Brazil is a unique administrative region that houses the nation’s capital, Brasília. Established on April 21, 1960, it was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer and urban planner Lúcio Costa to serve as the new heart of the nation. Unlike other Brazilian states, it has no municipalities and is governed directly by the federal government.
