Laredo

Maps and Statistics of Laredo

Laredo is a city in Texas, situated on the north bank of the Rio Grande, directly across from Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Known for its rich history and cultural fusion, Laredo is the county seat of Webb County and is one of the oldest crossing points along the U.S.-Mexico border. Founded in 1755, it was originally part of the Spanish colony of Nuevo Santander. The city played a pivotal role in the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande in 1840, with its historic capital building still preserved today as a museum.

A vibrant blend of American and Mexican cultures characterizes Laredo, contributing to its unique festivals, cuisine, and architectural styles. The economy is largely driven by international trade, with several major transportation and logistics companies operating in the region. The city's location as a gateway for commerce between the two countries has turned it into one of the busiest inland ports in the United States. Education is served by several institutions, including Texas A&M International University. Laredo is also known for its annual Washington's Birthday Celebration, one of the largest of its kind in the country.
