Los Angeles, often known as LA, is a major city in California and the second-largest city in the United States by population, following New York City. It is renowned for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic and cultural diversity, and the entertainment industry, particularly Hollywood. It was later annexed by the United States in 1848 following the Mexican-American War. The city is a hub for creativity, home to major film studios and record labels, which contributes to its nickname, the "Entertainment Capital of the World."

The city's sprawling metropolitan area covers approximately 503 square miles and features diverse neighborhoods such as Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Venice Beach.
