The Plazas de Soberanía are small Spanish territories located on the northern coast of Africa. They include several exclaves such as Ceuta and Melilla, as well as a few islands and islets like the Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera, the Alhucemas Islands, and the Chafarinas Islands. These areas, under Spanish sovereignty, hold strategic military and historical significance, dating back to the Reconquista and the subsequent period of Spanish colonial expansion.
