Maps and Statistics of Waco

Waco is a city situated in central Texas, United States, serving as the county seat of McLennan County. It is strategically located along the Brazos River and is approximately halfway between the state’s major cities of Dallas and Austin, about 90 miles from each. Founded in 1849, Waco has a rich history, with its name derived from the Huaco Indians, the area’s original settlers. Today, it is known for being home to Baylor University, the oldest continuously operating university in Texas, which adds a youthful energy to the city.

Waco gained significant media attention in 1993 due to the siege of the Branch Davidian compound by federal agents, an event that has since become a part of the city's complex history. Beyond its past, Waco offers a diverse cultural scene, highlighted by sites like the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, the Dr Pepper Museum, and the Waco Mammoth National Monument, where well-preserved mammoth fossils can be viewed. Additionally, Waco has become a popular destination for visitors due to Magnolia Market, founded by Chip and Joanna Gaines of HGTV's "Fixer Upper."
