Washington, D.C., formally known as the District of Columbia, is the capital city of the United States. It is located on the east bank of the Potomac River, bordered by the states of Maryland and Virginia. The city was founded on July 16, 1790, and named in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States.

Washington, D.C., is the political hub of the U.S., hosting the three branches of the federal government: the Executive, led by the President at the White House; the Legislative, represented by Congress held at the Capitol; and the Judicial, overseen by the Supreme Court. The city is also home to numerous national monuments and museums, predominantly situated on or around the National Mall.

Beyond its political significance, Washington, D.C., is culturally vibrant, with a diverse population contributing to its dynamic arts scene, historical landmarks, and international cuisine. The city's unique status means it is not part of any state and has a special form of governance, with representation in Congress as a non-voting delegate and limited local authority.
